Just when you though we’d stepped into the darkest timeline and “six seasons and a movie” was officially out of reach, Yahoo has stepped in to bring Community back after NBC’s cancellation. Netflix and Hulu had long been rumored to be looking into reviving the show, but in an effort to carve its own niche into the TV market, the web giant has tapped the cult-favorite show to return on its Yahoo Screen service.
The entire cast, including Joel McHale, Gillian Jacobs, Yvette Nicole Brown, Danny Pudi, Alison Brie, Ken Jeong and Jim Rash, are slated to return along with showrunner Dan Harmon for the show’s 13-episode sixth season, exclusively on Yahoo Screen.
Harmon himself, never without a snarky comment, had this to say about the the show’s new life:
“I am very pleased that Community will be returning for its predestined sixth season on Yahoo. I look forward to bringing our beloved NBC sitcom to a larger audience by moving it online. I vow to dominate our new competition. Rest easy, Big Bang Theory. Look out, Bang Bus!”
Star Joel McHale also had this hilarious response:
‘The reports of our cancelation have been greatly exaggerated.’ — Mark Twain (The other version of this quote has been wrong for years). #SixSeasonsAndaMovie is real. Thank you Sony. Thank you Yahoo. Thank you Dan Harmon. And thank you to the greatest f%$#ing fans in the history of the human race. It’s the internet. We can swear now.
The last bit of that quote certainly adds an interesting element to Community‘s return. Without network censors forcing the content to be somewhat sanitized, the characters are now free to do and say more than ever before. No doubt that new freedom will translate into some very “meta” storylines.
