It’s been almost five years since Joseph Kosinski brought Tron back to the big screen with 2010’s Tron Legacy, and while the film looked magnificent, its messy, mediocre narrative did little to justify its existence. But it seems Disney is eager to take one more run at the franchise – Tron 3 will reportedly begin shooting in Vancouver this fall.
The news comes via Van City Buzz, a local site that covers happenings in and around Vancouver. They claim that Disney has given a green light to the film, with shooting schedule to commence on October 5. Garrett Hedlund is expected to reprise his role as Sam Flynn, and while no other casting has been confirmed, Badass Digest reports that Kosinski is also slated to return to the director’s chair.
I’m not sure if this is something we should be all that excited about, to be honest. I loved the visuals in Tron Legacy, and the nostalgia factor certainly helped, but it doesn’t hold up all that well. The story is weak, the characters are underdeveloped, and at times it’s just boring. There’s plenty of fun to be had in this world, but the filmmakers didn’t seem to take that into consideration the last time around.
For the record, Disney hasn’t confirmed any of this news, but that’s probably because they’re saving the official announcement for a more strategic time and place. In the meantime, we’ll just have to cross our fingers that third time’s a charm, and that Tron 3 will be able to find its footing.
More on this as it develops.
