Olivia Wilde and Garrett Hedlund, the stars of Tron Legacy, will return to their respective roles in Tron 3 for Disney. The sequel will also see Joseph Kosinski, the director of the 2010 film, return to his position behind the camera.
Tron Legacy was the sequel to the 1982 cult-favorite Tron, that starred a young Jeff Bridges and Bruce Boxleitner. In the sequel, Hedlund played Bridges’ son, who enters the computer program virtual reality world “The Grid” to find his father. While there, he met Quorra (Wilde), a sexy algorithm that was given a human form and was last seen entering the real world at the end of Tron: Legacy.
The sequel has been in development since the release of the 2010 film, but only now has begun to pick up traction. Hedlund said in 2012 that he would return to the franchise, but at the time the project was supposed to begin filming in 2014. Things had been quiet on the Disney front regarding the film, even after the 2014 start date came and went with no Tron news.
With this official confirmation, Tron 3 is most likely preparing to start filming this fall in Vancouver, British Columbia. No story details are known at this time, but with things finally picking up for the film, we expect more casting and a synopsis in the upcoming months.
