Magic Mike XXL Trailer: Channing Tatum is Back on the Stage

Channing Tatum and Steven Soderbergh found success with 2012’s summer release Magic Mike, the semi-autobiographical story of a male stripper (Tatum) trying to find his place in the world. The film grossed an impressive $113 million on a modest $7 million production budget, and sequel discussions began shortly after the film opened. Now, we’ve got out first official look at Magic Mike XXL.

The Magic Mike XXL trailer debuted on Ellen this morning. You can check it out below.

Let’s be honest – this is a really entertaining trailer. Tatum is hugely charismatic and entertaining with the right kind of material, and this definitely falls into that category. It looks like this will be every bit as fun as the first film, and that’s really all we can ask for.

Most of the supporting cast from Magic Mike returns here, including Matt Bomer, Joe Manganiello, Kevin Nash, Adam Rodriguez, and Gabriel Iglesias. Noticeably absent is Matthew McConaughey, who stole every scene out from under the noses (and thongs) of his co-stars in the original film.

Soderbergh also won’t be returning to the director’s chair – those honors will go to Gregory Jacobs, who worked as Soderbergh’s AD on a number of projects. But Soderbergh will still be involved – he’s actually the director of photography on this sequel, so expect the film to retain plenty of his signature style.

Magic Mike XXL will be in theaters on July 1.

Picking up the story three years after Mike bowed out of the stripper life at the top of his game, “Magic Mike XXL” finds the remaining Kings of Tampa likewise ready to throw in the towel. But they want to do it their way: burning down the house in one last blow-out performance in Myrtle Beach, and with legendary headliner Magic Mike sharing the spotlight with them. On the road to their final show, with whistle stops in Jacksonville and Savannah to renew old acquaintances and make new friends, Mike and the guys learn some new moves and shake off the past in surprising ways.
