Game of Thrones Season 5 Premiere Date Announced

The wait is nearly over. In a press release issued earlier today, HBO has confirmed that Game of Thrones Season 5 will premiere in April. The return to Westeros will be immediately followed by the Season 2 premiere of Silicon Valley, and the Season 4 premiere of Veep. Keep reading for more details.

Game of Thrones is scheduled to premiere its fifth season on Sunday, April 12th at 9:00pm. Silicon Valley will follow at 10:00pm, and Veep at 10:30pm. The cable network also announced that Real Time with Bill Maher has been renewed for two additional seasons, which will air in 2016 and 2017.

The premiere news comes shortly after the announcement that Game of Thrones will be the first television series to be featured in the IMAX format. In an exclusive week-long engagement beginning January 23, the final two episodes of the fourth season will be digitally remastered and screened in more than 150 IMAX locations, and followed by an exclusive teaser for the fifth season.

“We couldn’t think of a series more fitting than Game of Thrones to be the first presented in IMAX,” said Greg Foster, CEO of IMAX Entertainment. “The scope and production quality of the show is quite remarkable, which will be highlighted even further in select IMAX locations – allowing fans, as never before, to become a part of author George R. R. Martin’s world that David Benioff and D. B. Weiss created for HBO. It has the action, storyline and epic nature that our fans seek in IMAX and we’re thrilled to team with HBO and our longtime partners at Warner Brothers to offer audiences a chance to experience it in the ultimate theatre setting joined by other fans of the series.”

Not much has been revealed about the plot of the show’s fifth season – while Game of Thrones will undoubtedly continue to draw from George R.R. Martin’s novels, the series is fast approaching the point where it will surpass the published material. In fact, fans were surprised by some elements in the previous season, as they revealed events that had not yet occurred in the pages of the bestselling fantasy series.

We’ll bring you more information on Game of Thrones Season 5 as it becomes available.
