Freaks, Geeks, and 2011.

I know the anticipation is almost palpable and Nerd Rep fans all over the world can wait no longer.  So here it is, my top 10 2011 geek-gasm moments:

1. San Diego Comic Con.

Are you fucking kidding me?! As if anything else actually stood a chance.  What else would be the top nerdiest moment of 2011 for any red-blooded Star Wars-X-Men-Avengers-Comics-Movie loving fan? Seeing Amazing Spidey footage, meeting Mike Patton again, getting the first look at Red State, exclusive Dexter figures, crazy costumes… I could go on and on and on until 2012 was over.  Is there a 2012 Comic Con in my future?

2. Red Hot Chili Peppers release I’m With You.

There are albums that get released and then there are Chili Pepper releases.  Their much hyped and anticipated new album was almost solely responsible for making 2011 worth surviving. Why would you torture your ears by depriving them of its greatness?  It’s been several months since the release and I still can’t listen to it enough.  My wife, on the other hand, might have a different opinion…

3. Star Wars on Blu-ray.

George Lucas may be raping my childhood, but rape is certainly more enjoyable in 1080p.  Every scene and image looks absolutely perfect.  So good, infact, it made me watch Episode I again!  Noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!

4. The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo.

Great Stieg Larsson book? Check. Great director in David Fincher? Check. Great actors in Rooney Mara and Daniel Craig? Check. Great soundtrack from Reznor and Ross? Check. Everything about this film seemed almost too good to be true.  Luckily for us, it was even better.  Certainly tops all opposition in the film category for 2011.  Let’s hope everyone is back to play with fire!

5. Dexter.

Even though it wasn’t as great as some of the past seasons, I’m relatively sure I would be pumped just watching Dex stare at a blood-splatted wall for 12 episodes.  Luckily, we didn’t have to test that theory this season.  Travis and Geller made for good opposition, but the real story is how they wisely left plotlines open to bleed into the remaining two seasons of the show.  The Dex/Deb dynamic will be fun to see unravail with her recent discoveries.

6. The Walking Dead.

Season 1 was absolutley perfect in every way and so far, season 2 has lived up to expectations.  Much like the Dexter books and TV series, The Walking Dead is like an alternate universe to the comics.  Well-written, great acting, and fantastic special effects.  Can’t wait for the second half of the season to resume in February and watch Shane shoot more of the living dead, and maybe some of the living too!

7. X-Men: Schism.

Cyclops versus Wolverine, ’nuff said!  In the comic universe, the splitting of the X-Men has been a welcomed turn of events.  This has been a storyline that has been developing for nearly thirty years since the two first meet in Giant Sized X-Men #1.  Schism was well-written and did a nice job of making all X-Titles relevant, leading into the Regenesis event.

8. Captain America: The First Avenger.

Being one of the first audiences to see Captain America and the subsequent teaser trailer for The Avengers at Comic Con was an awesome experience.  The final chapter leading up to The Avengers was a well-done period piece and Chris Evans pulled off the part without coming off cheesy or insincere.  Watching it with lots of fellow geeks in San Diego made the experience even more priceless.

9. American Horror Story.

Talk about the best thing to happen to television without hardly anyone realizing it.  Every week this show got stranger, sexier, darker, and more addicting.  A total new spin on the haunted house tale in a very original and refreshing way.  It’s a welcome compliment to Dexter and The Walking Dead viewing.  Courious to see which direction the show goes next season…with a new cast!?

10. True Blood season finale.

Holy shit.  For the first time the show actually left me shocked, intrigued, and dying to see where they go with it in 2012.  It’s about time, too.  Vampires don’t glitter, they kick ass and drink a ton of blood!
