It’s May the 4th, and we’re kicking off Star Wars Day by bringing you a behind-the-scenes look at Star Wars: The Force Awakens. This video comes courtesy of Vanity Fair, who recently sent photoghrapher Annie Leibovitz to the set of the film for a cover shoot.
The Vanity Fair cover was unveiled over the weekend, and the accompanying video popped up early this morning on the magazine website. Check it out below.
One thing that we notice immediately is that this video seems to confirm the longstanding rumor that Kyle Ren would be portrayed by Adam Driver. There’s a quick shot of driver in the costume, without the mask, so unless this is some kind of bait-and-switch, that’s one more role we can check off the list.
Another interesting thing to note is that 12 Years a Slave actress Lupita Nyong’o appears to be portraying her character via motion capture. The other franchise newcomers, including Johny Boyega, Daisy Ridley and Oscar Isaac, all seem to be playing humans, so this is something of a curious development.
Vanity Fair is teasing more revelations in the forthcoming issue, including “never-before-seen images of characters played by Adam Driver, Gwendoline Christie, and Lupita Nyong’o.” Hopefully they’ll continue to dole out some of those images as the week goes on, but regardless, we won’t be waiting long: the magazine will be available as a digital edition on Thursday, May 7, with the print edition hitting newsstands on May 12.
Star Wars: The Force Awakens will be in theaters on December 18. You can check out the Vanity Fair cover below, and “May the 4th Be With You.”
