As Kevin Smith’s horror film Tusk prepares for its world premiere next month at the Toronto International Film Festival, the director is preparing to roll camera on his follow-up, the action-adventure comedy Yoga Hosers. Smith revealed during his Comic-Con panel that Yoga Hosers would be his next project, and now thanks to THR, we have some more info, including some casting news.
Johnny Depp and his daughter, Lily-Rose Depp, will star in the film, alongside the director’s own daughter, Harley Quinn Smith. Here’s the breakdown of the script, according to the THR story:
[Yoga] Hosers centers on 15-year-old yoga nuts Colleen Collette (Lily-Rose Depp) and Colleen McKenzie (Harley Quinn Smith) who have an after-school job at a Manitoba convenience store called Eh-2-Zed. When an ancient evil rises from beneath Canada’s crust and threatens their big invitation to a Grade 12 party, the Colleens join forces with a legendary man-hunter from Montreal named Guy Lapointe (Depp) to fight for their lives with, according to the producers, “all seven Chakras, one Warrior Pose at a time.”
It’s worth noting that the character of Guy Lapointe appears in Tusk. The role was originally offered to Quentin Tarantino, and rumors have been circulating that Depp had stepped into the role after Tarantino passed on the opportunity. While Smith has remained closed-lipped on the subject, this seems to confirm it. The two convenience store characters also have a brief cameo in Tusk – in fact, they can be glimpsed in the film’s trailer.
Smith, an avid fan (and sometimes writer) of comic books, has flirted with making a superhero film in the past, but tells THR that he considers this his first official foray into the genre. “People always ask me ‘Are you ever going to make a comic book movie?’” he says. “This is it – but instead of yet another dude saving the day, our antiheroes are the most feared and formidable creatures man has ever encountered: two fifteen year old girls.”
The film will also see the entire cast of Tusk returning for more action, including Michael Parks, Justin Long, Haley Joel Osment, Genesis Rodriguez, Ralph Garman, Jennifer Schwalbach and Harley Morenstein. New additions for this film include Tony Hale, Natasha Lyonne, Austin Butler, Adam Brody, Tyler Posey and frequent Smith collaborator Jason Mewes.
Yoga Hosers begins production this week, for a release sometime in 2015. Tusk will debut at the Toronto International Film Festival before rolling out to theaters on September 19.
