With the universal acclaim heaped upon Daredevil by critics and fans alike, it should come as no surprise that Marvel has decided to shoot another season of the Netflix series. What is surprising, however, is that the studio appears to be fast-tracking the project, announcing that Daredevil Season 2 will air in 2016.
Here’s the official word from Marvel:
“With the first season of “Marvel’s Daredevil” proving a smash success with both audiences and critics, Netflix and Marvel will continue to create further adventures of the Man Without Fear! Doug Petrie (“Buffy the Vampire Slayer,” “American Horror Story”) and Marco Ramirez (“Sons of Anarchy”), who worked closely with Executive Producers Steven S. DeKnight and Drew Goddard during the first season, will serve as showrunners for Season 2. Petrie, Ramirez, Goddard (“Cabin in the Woods”), and Jeph Loeb (“Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.”) will serve as Executive Producers of Season 2.”
So with Doug Petrie and Marco Ramirez stepping into the role of showrunner for the second season, where does that leave Season 1 showrunner Steven DeKnight? Looks like his schedule is currently locked up and he couldn’t make room for the project:
“While previous commitments unfortunately prevent me from continuing on with Daredevil into its second season,” DeKnight explains, “I could not be happier that Doug Petrie and Marco Ramirez are carrying the torch. They were invaluable collaborators during our first season, and I for one can’t wait to see what they do with the show moving forward.”
While DeKnight’s departure is certainly a bit of a sour note, we’re pretty confident that Marvel can continue to deliver the same sort of quality that was established with the first season of Daredevil. As long as we get to see more of Charlie Cox and Vincent D’Onofrio, then you can count us in.
Daredevil Season 2 will air on Netflix sometime in 2016, along with the upcoming Luke Cage series, while Marvel’s AKA Jessica Jones will premiere later this year on the streaming network.
