In a brief announcement today, FX has confirmed that they “will not be moving forward with a third season of The Bridge.” While the quality of the storytelling in Season Two was leaps and bounds over the first season, it seems the show wasn’t pulling in enough viewers to warrant a renewal. Indeed, the news comes just three weeks after the season finale, which garnered just over 1 million viewers, a number which has steadily declined since the season premiere.
Variety picked up a brief quote from production company Shine about the unfortunate news:
“We thank our partners at FX for their tireless efforts in developing and launching ‘The Bridge’ with us. From its fresh, unique voice to its deep and diverse ensemble cast, this is a series that we are all very proud of.”
Variety also mentions that Shine is looking into other options to keep the series alive, a statement echoed by Alan Sepinwall at Hitfix. It’s possible The Bridge could find new life on a different network, or perhaps at Netflix or Amazon, but it’s a long shot. For now, we’ll assume that we’ve seen the last of Sonya and Marco, but we’ll keep our fingers crossed that the show finds a new home.
