The X-Files Returns to Fox for 6-Episode Limited Series

The X-Files fans wanted to believe, and now they’re being rewarded for their loyalty with new episodes returning to Fox. Even better is the accompanying news that both David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson will be returning to the roles that defined their careers – Fox Mulder and Dana Scully. Additionally, creator and longtime show mastermind Chris Carter will be back as executive producer in the 6-episode limited series run.

Carter had this to say about the iconic show’s return:

“I think of it as a 13-year commercial break. The good news is the world has only gotten that much stranger, a perfect time to tell these six stories.”

The news was officially announced by Chairmen and CEOs of Fox Television Group Dana Walden and Gary Newman – both were involved with the show in their days at 20th Century Fox TV.

“We had the privilege of working with Chris on all nine seasons of The X-Files — one of the most rewarding creative experiences of our careers – and we couldn’t be more excited to explore that incredible world with him again,”  Newman and Walden state. “The X-Files was not only a seminal show for both the studio and the network, it was a worldwide phenomenon that shaped pop culture — yet remained a true gem for the legions of fans who embraced it from the beginning. Few shows on television have drawn such dedicated fans as The X-Files,’and we’re ecstatic to give them the next thrilling chapter of Mulder and Scully they’ve been waiting for.”

Both Duchovny and Anderson have had fairly successful post-X-Files careers, with Duchovny most notably on Californication and Anderson recently having a significant role in the in one of our favorites, Hannibal. There’s no word on what the subject matter of the limited series will be, but there’s certainly quite a few loose ends to tie up with the show’s alien mythology story –  and Anderson even mentioned a desire to go back and revisit that plot in a recent Nerdist podcast that started a #XFiles2015 Twitter hashtag campaign. Bravo, guys.

Most likely Fox will be adding the show into their new ‘Event Series’ line that started with the return of 24, but no premiere date for The X-Files has been announced at this time. Also unknown is whether any of the remaining original cast will return. We’ll keep you posted.
