Disney Officially Announces Frozen 2

Rumors of a Frozen sequel have been circulating nearly as long as the film has been released, but now it’s official. During a conference call with investors, Disney CEO Bob Iger confirmed that Frozen 2 is officially in development.

Frozen directors Chris Buck and Jennifer Lee are working on the sequel, and Josh Gad has been confirmed to return as the voice of Olaf. No release date has been announced, and we have no idea what the story will look like – in fact, other than the confirmation that the studio is moving ahead, there’s not really much to report.

Here’s the press release from Disney:

It’s of-f-f-f-f-icial: “Frozen 2” is in development at Walt Disney Animation Studios with directors Chris Buck and Jennifer Lee and producer Peter Del Vecho, the Oscar®-winning filmmaking team behind “Frozen.” The news was announced at Disney’s Annual Meeting of Shareholders this morning by Bob Iger, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of The Walt Disney Company; John Lasseter, Chief Creative Officer of Walt Disney and Pixar Animation Studios; and actor Josh Gad, who provides the voice of Olaf from “Frozen.”

“We enjoyed making Frozen Fever so much and being back in that world with those characters,” said John Lasseter. “Jennifer Lee and Chris Buck have come up with a great idea for a sequel and you will be hearing a lot more about it and we’re taking you back to Arendelle. We are so excited about that.”

A release date and production details are on ice for now.

Don’t expect to see Frozen 2 any time soon – with development just now getting started, it’ll be a few years before a finished product comes together. But in the meantime, fans of the film can get their fix with Frozen Fever, an all-new short that will be playing in theaters alongside Disney’s live-action Cinderella remake.
