It’s been a long time since we’ve heard any news about Splinter Cell, the film adaptation of the popular video game franchise. Tom Hardy was tapped to star all the way back in November 2012, and since then it’s been mostly radio silence. But that’s about to change, with The Hollywood Reporter breaking the news that Doug Liman is in final negotiations to helm the film.
THR also says the film is scheduled to roll camera in August, with a 2015 release date in mind. Liman seems like a perfect choice for this sort of thing – much better than Peter Berg, who was previously attached when the film was set up at DreamWorks. Liman has seen great success with the spy thriller genre (The Bourne Identity, Mr. and Mrs. Smith), and he knows how to shoot action, which the film will certainly have its fair share of.
With a rising star in the lead and an accomplished director at the helm, could Splinter Cell turn into the first critically and commercially successful video game film?
