With yesterday’s announcement that Michael Douglas had been added to the cast of Ant-Man, it looks like Marvel is starting to lay the foundations for Phase Three of their cinematic universe. Doctor Strange has long been rumored to be part of the next wave of Marvel films, and if a new report turns out to be true, the studio may be working on their highest-profile casting yet for the title role.
Latino Review is reporting that a “well-connected source” says Johnny Depp recently took a meeting with the studio to discuss starring in Doctor Strange. A longtime comic book fan, Depp is said to be very interested in working with Marvel, and it’s worth noting that Depp had enjoyed a very successful relationship with the studio’s parent company, Disney.
While Depp is confirmed for another Pirates of the Caribbean film, the studio would likely be willing to shuffle the production schedule around in order to accommodate Depp’s desire to appear in Doctor Strange. If the deal closes, the script would also need to be altered in order to suit Depp, as the current draft features a 30-year-old title character.
There are still plenty of moving parts here, so this is far from a confirmation that Depp will step into the role. Stay tuned as more information becomes available.
