The long-awaited biopic of pioneering rap group N.W.A. will finally be making its way to theaters later this fall, and the first Straight Outta Compton trailer has been unveiled in explicit fashion. The red-band clip features plenty of the violence, sexuality and language that was so prevalent in the group’s music – and fans wouldn’t want it any other way.

N.W.A. gained notoriety in the late 1980s and for their no-holds-barred approach to hip-hop, helping create the “gangsta rap” genre and using their music as a means of protest against the treatment of black youths in inner-city neighborhoods. The group’s success would launch founding members Eazy-E, Ice Cube and Dr. Dre into successful solo careers, with Cube and Dre crossing over into mainstream stardom, and Eazy passing away due to complications from AIDS in 1995.
The film stars Corey Hawkins as Dre, Jason Mitchell as Eazy, and Ice Cube’s real-life son, O’Shea Jackson Jr. as his father. Paul Giamatti appears as the group’s manager, Jerry Heller. Straight Outta Compton hits theaters on August 14.
In the mid-1980s, the streets of Compton, California, were some of the most dangerous in the country. When five young men translated their experiences growing up into brutally honest music that rebelled against abusive authority, they gave an explosive voice to a silenced generation. Following the meteoric rise and fall of N.W.A., Straight Outta Compton tells the astonishing story of how these youngsters revolutionized music and pop culture forever the moment they told the world the truth about life in the hood and ignited a cultural war.
Starring O’Shea Jackson Jr., Corey Hawkins and Jason Mitchell as Ice Cube, Dr. Dre and Eazy-E, Straight Outta Compton is directed by F. Gary Gray (Friday, Set It Off, The Italian Job). The drama is produced by original N.W.A. members Ice Cube and Dr. Dre, who are joined by fellow producers Matt Alvarez and Tomica Woods-Wright. Will Packer serves as executive producer of the film alongside Gray.
