Part of the fun of each release in DC Universe’s Animated Original Movies line is digging through the special features to find out what’s coming next. WorldsFinestOnline got an early look at the back of this October’s release Batman: Assault on Arkham and we can now confirm the next release will be Justice League: Throne of Atlantis. Get a closer look at the artwork below:
Fans were intrigued to hear DC Animation’s decision to make Justice League: War (after its completion) the start of a new “shared universe continuity” to which all future releases would have to adhere. The most recent release, Son of Batman, brought back Jason O’Mara as the voice of Batman and definitely seemed to fit within that universe. This new Justice League should be a direct sequel to Justice League: War and bring back some, if not all, of that film’s voice actors.
Those that stuck around after Justice League: War for its post-credits sequence know that it heavily foreshadowed a film based on the “New 52” Justice League storyline Throne of Atlantis, written by Geoff Johns. The arc centered around a full-scale assault on “surface dwellers” by Aquaman’s brother Orm and the armies of Atlantis when a missile accident causes losses of innocent Atlantean life. Arthur Curry/Aquaman must choose between his new Justice League family and his loyalty to the people of Atlantis, and his rightful place on its throne.
Personally, I really love that arc and felt it had an extremely large cinematic scale that could translate well to a live-action film, but seeing it fully realized in animation without the restraints of live-action is enticing as well. Hopefully DC Animation will be forthcoming soon with an official announcement and some casting news.
