The first look at Superman in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice not enough for you today? Well here’s a little bit more info for you to chew on going into your 4th of July weekend. Beware spoilers, but the *ahem* not always reliable Latino Review claims to have the scoop on four more characters, mostly villainous overtones, to appear in the film.
The first three are straight-up bad guys from the DC funny pages. Read the article linked above for details of their specific roles in this film, but here are characters and their comic backgrounds:
Victor Zsasz in ‘Arkham Asylum’ – Morgan Edge (Rutger Hauer) in ‘Smallville’
Victor Zsasz, a serial killer with a penchant for knives, and a habit of carving his kill tally into his own body. Zsasz first appeared in comics in the early ’90s, and was seen in Batman Begins. He’s also in the recent video games Arkham Asylum and Arkham City.
Morgan Edge, who has been around in comics since the ’70s, and rebooted a few times, generally as a media mogul or pundit, but also as part of the alien-powered mob organization Intergang. The current comics version is the owner of the Daily Planet, with some qualities seemingly inspired by the News International phone hacking scandal.
David Cain, an assassin who first appeared in comics in the late ’90s, and who helped train young Bruce Wayne and has been an associate of Ra’s al Ghul and the League of Assassins.
Victor Zsasz is a very cool choice due to his somewhat obscure noteriety, yet very creepy and intimidating history and appearance. I’ve long thought he’d be interesting in a bigger film role. Morgan Edge was a recurring character on Smallville, played by the great Rutger Hauer, and also seems like a great choice for a mob-type villain for Superman in this cinematic world. David Cain is far more obscure then these two men though, without any real exposure in any major recent mediums.
Cynthia Addai-Robinson as Amanda Waller in ‘Arrow’
In addition to those baddies, Latino Review is claiming a character long speculated to be the Nick Fury of the DC Universe, Amanda Waller, will be appearing in the film. Waller’s character normally is a government agent of some sort with an anti-superhero agenda and has seen many recent incarnations in live-action form including an ongoing role on Arrow played by Cynthia Addai-Robinson (Spartacus), by Angela Bassett in Green Lantern, and Pam Grier on Smallville.
The interesting thing that pops out to me is that, if this rumor is indeed true, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice so far has a cast full of villains with absolutely no super powers. Would this mean that they are keeping this one completely grounded to the point of having only humans taking on Superman, thus keeping the big gun villains like Darkseid, Brainiac or Doomsday for Justice League? Basically the world against Superman?
Hopefully we’ll get this confirmed or de-bunked soon, but surely more will be revealed at Comic-Con 2014. Stay tuned to The Nerd Repository.
Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice opens May 6, 2016.
