Thursday morning saw the usual mix of excitement and disappointment as the tremendous 2013-2014 television season got the list of noms and snubs for the 2014 Emmy Awards. With such a strong crop of content to sort through, this had to be a tough one to whittle down to the already extensive list. Carson Daly and Mindy Kaling were given the duties of giving the Hollywood talent the good news and in some cases, the bad news.
A large portion of the list are no-brainers, with Breaking Bad, True Detective, Downton Abbey, House of Cards and a few others cleaning up as expected. Very pleased, but not surprised, Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson both got Outstanding Lead Actor nods for True Detective, while the other stellar duo of Martin Freeman and Billy Bob Thornton got nominated in the Outstanding Miniseries or Movie category for Fargo. Freeman actually double-dipped with a nom for Sherlock: His Last Vow along with his co-star Benedict Cumberbatch.
On the comedy side, it was nice to see freshman show Silicon Valley get the Outstanding Comedy Series nomination along with another much deserving show, Orange is the New Black. It’s also nice to see Amy Poehler get her last hurrah with Parks & Recreation on the nomination list for Outstanding Actress in a Comedy Series. My personal favorite nomination (it warms my heart!) is Andre Braugher for his brilliantly deadpan and hilarious work on Brooklyn Nine-Nine.
Coming from a nerdy website, it’s always great to see a genre favorite like Game of Thrones representing with an Outstanding Drama Series nod and Outstanding Supporting Actor nomination for Peter Dinklage, although The Walking Dead fans are surely a bit outraged today at yet another full sweep snub of all the major categories.
Speaking of snubs, Tatiana Maslany was yet again shutout for her amazing work on Orphan Black to no one’s real surprise. The show is just too small and genre-heavy (aka weird) to get taken seriously by the Emmy judges. But in a more outrageous oversight, The Americans is still somehow completely overlooked by the awards show. I don’t know how they keep missing this show that just exudes brilliance and awards quality performances and content.
But why listen to me complain and tell you what deserved their nominations and what didnt? Check out the full list of the major categories below:
