Simon Pegg Writing Star Trek 3

Star Trek 3 news continues to come down the pipeline, and this next piece is pretty awesome: Simon Pegg will be co-writing the film, working alongside Doug Jung on the script for the new installment of the franchise.

The news comes via Deadline, who says that Jung’s previous working relationship with Bad Robot on the Paramount film Diamond led to the gig. Pegg, of course, is already heavily entrenched in the rebooted Star Trek universe that J.J. Abrams created, having portrayed Scotty in the last two films. Pegg is also no stranger to the writer’s chair, with credits that include Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz, and The World’s End.

Fast and Furious franchise director Justin Lin recently boarded Star Trek 3 as director shortly after Roberto Orci’s exit, and while we still don’t know how the plot of the film will shape up, allowing Pegg to guide the future of the franchise seems like a pretty solid move. He’s a huge fan of the Star Trek universe, he’s a talented writer, and he’s got plenty of geek cred. Color me excited.

Whatever Pegg and Jung have in mind, they’ll need to get to work pretty quickly: Star Trek 3 is scheduled to begin shooting in April, with a July 2016 release date in mind.
