Supergirl Melissa Benoist Revealed in First Official Images

Warner Bros TV and CBS have revealed the first official look at Melissa Benoist as Supergirl, and things are looking pretty good. Check it out below:

The suit itself definitely keeps the darker vibe that Henry Cavill wears in Man of Steel, but my first impression is that the suit meshes very well with the aesthetic of The Flash over on The CW. Benoist herself definitely lightened her hair, but is not the bleach blonde look that has been associated with the character both live-action and in the comics. Sleazy fanboys everywhere will also be sad to see the belly baring midriff is also gone for a more classy, traditional look.

Here’s the breakdown from Warner Bros TV on the creation of the suit:

  • The costume for Supergirl was designed by three-time Oscar® winner Colleen Atwood, who also designed the costumes for The Flash & Arrow and whose motion picture credits include Academy Awards® for her work on Alice in Wonderland, Memoirs of a Geisha and Chicago, as well as eight additional Oscar® nominations for films such as Into the Woods, Snow White and the Huntsman, Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street and Sleepy Hollow, among others.

Colleen Atwood said, “In designing Supergirl, I wanted to embrace the past, but more importantly, thrust her into the street-style action hero of today.”

Personally, I really dig the overall look of the outfit and think Atwood has really, once again, outdone herself. The mesh design in the blue sections definitely evokes the newer version of Kara’s cousin in Metropolis, but the little touches like the yellow/gold around the maroon on the “S” symbol look really sharp. I even like the fact that she’s wearing red leggings under her skirt and boots. This Supergirl is all class and I’m looking forward to seeing a more complex and dynamic Kara Zor-El than has sometimes been portrayed in different mediums.

Production begins on the Supergirl pilot this week.
