The last daughter of Krypton is officially coming to television: Supergirl has been given a series order by CBS, according to the scoop from THR. The series will star Melissa Benoist (Glee, Whiplash) as Kara Zor-El/Supergirl, cousin to Kal-El/Superman, in the DC Comics adaptation.
THR does not reveal how many episodes will be put into production, but the Supergirl pilot didn’t quite land this order with ease. Rumors circulated that the pilot had issues and CBS was allegedly even interested in shopping the Warner Bros TV-produced show to their sister network, where the other DC properties The Flash and Arrow reside.
The article goes on to say that when CBS Entertainment chairman Nina Tassler saw the pilot, everything changed, and she loved it and pushed the show through to series due to her search for shows with strong female leads. CBS has a pretty packed schedule, but the network may put Supergirl on Sunday nights or potentially pair it with their sci-fi summer shows like Under the Dome.
Supergirl comes from writer/exec producers Ali Adler and Greg Berlanti and The Flash and Arrow MVP Andrew Kreisberg. Kara Zor-El will join The Flash, Arrow, Gotham and the on-the-bubble Constantine as the Warner Bros TV-produced DC Comics properties being represented in live action on television.
