Now that we’ve had plenty of time to digest the Star Wars: The Force Awakens teaser trailer, it’s time to put some names to the faces we saw in the footage. Lucasfilm has partnered with Entertainment Weekly to tell us which characters we saw in the trailer, and the reveal comes via an awesome retro throwback to the early days of Star Wars fandom.
Earlier today, Lucasfilm revealed images from the trailer, mocked up to resemble the original Star Wars trading cards from Topps. Along with each image comes a caption which reveals the names of the characters, which you can check out below:
#53 — Poe Dameron in his X-Wing #67 — Kylo Ren ignites his Lightsaber #96 — The Millennium Falcon
So now we know: the “ball droid” is called BB-8, while Oscar Isaac is Poe Dameron, the unidentified Sith is Kylo Ren, Daisy Ridley is Rey, and John Boyega is Finn. That still leaves a big question mark hanging over the roles for plenty of others, including Lupita Nyong’o, Gwendoline Christie, Domhnall Gleeson, Max von Sydow, and Andy Serkis. You could also throw Adam Driver onto that list, but I’ve got a hunch that he’s playing Kylo Ren, and they’re just keeping that under wraps for right now.
“I’m only sorry we couldn’t give everyone a stick of gum,” Abrams told EW about the reveal. He also confirmed that the numbering sequence holds some significance – what that significance is, of course, is something we can only guess for now. We’re still more than a year away from the film’s release date, so information is likely to be scarce for awhile. Honestly, I’m surprised that this news was released so quickly – I assumed we’d be waiting another few months before we heard anything else.
Star Wars: The Force Awakens will hit theaters on December 18, 2015.
