It seems we can’t go more than a few days without another batch of Star Wars rumors popping up. While J.J. Abrams and his crew have kept official details under wraps as Episode VII continues production, there have been plenty of sources more than willing to go on the record, provided their identities remain undisclosed. The latest scoop comes from Making Star Wars, who have it on good authority that Episode VII will tie into the prequel trilogy by featuring a descendant of the villainous Count Dooku.
Their source claims that rumors and speculation surrounding the roles played by Adam Driver and Gwendoline Christie are “based on that central idea of an aristocratic family ‘line’ involving Episode 7’s bad guys. And as I said before, I firmly believe it’s the line of Dooku. Details and characters might have changed but the idea of an aristocratic villain with a heritage going back to the Clone Wars has been there from pre-production and as far as I know it’s still a major part of the story.”
The source also says that in addition to the spinoff films that have already been announced, there are also plans to give legendary Jedi master Obi-Wan Kenobi his own film, :
“I’ve heard from quite a few people now that an Obi-Wan Kenobi movie is in the works. For the spin-off movies they were initially going to stay away from any Jedi or Sith characters. But I’m hearing now that because of the popularity of Obi-Wan (fans recently voting for him on the official website etc) that an art team is now working with a writer on concepts for an Obi-Wan movie.”
The “website voting” he mentions was a poll conducted at StarWars.com that allowed fans to vote for their favorite character of all time. Obi-Wan was the clear winner, which isn’t terribly surprising considering his role in the Clone Wars animated series, which continues to resonate with younger audiences.
As far as when this rumored Obi-Wan film might take place, the most likely option would be during the period between the prequel films and the original trilogy. The lapse in time would allow for an older, more experienced Obi-Wan to take center stage, and could even open the door for Ewan McGregor to reprise his role, which he has repeatedly stated he would love to do. Of course, none of this has been confirmed at this point, but we can hope, right?
