All the speculation can finally come to a close, as we learned today that the first Star Wars spin-off film will be called Star Wars: Rogue One. Disney CEO Bob Iger made the announcement this morning during a Disney investor call, stating the film will be directed by Gareth Edwards (Gozilla) and written by Academy Award-nominated screenwriter Chris Weitz, based on a story by Industrial Light and Magic chief creative officer John Knoll.
The Theory of Everything star and Academy Award nominee Felicity Jones has also been confirmed in a starring role for the spin-off, which is scheduled to begin shooting this summer in London and will be released December 16th, 2016. Iger explained the film will “go well beyond the core Star Wars saga.”
The news is extremely interesting, based on the early reports that the film would center around a group of bounty hunters hired to pull off the legendary heist of the original Death Star plans. It’s very likely that this could still be the case and that the Rogue Squadron that fans have come to know and love truly started out as Rogues. Does this mean Star Wars: Rogue One will also feature a younger Wedge Antilles in the fray of the burgeoning squadron?
Just this little bit of insight into the subject matter of the film makes Star Wars: Rogue One sound that much more interesting. When exactly will it be set during the original trilogy? Who is Jones playing, and what other characters can we expect to appear in the film? Does the film still have bounty hunters? Hopefully we’ll get some more news and maybe even a synopsis of the film at the Star Wars Celebration event next month in Anaheim – or maybe even sooner.
