After the very tepid, to sometimes downright hateful reception for The Amazing Spider-Man 2, Sony is hard at work trying to find a new approach to capitalize on that universe. Deadline reports part of that new plan will be spinoff films revolving around a female superhero from the Spider-Man mythos, as well as a Venom and Carnage film (aptly titled Venom Carnage) teaming up the psychotic symbiote duo for mayhem and destruction.
No word yet as to which female character will get a solo film, but we do know that Lisa Joy (West World, Reminiscence) will be scripting that film with Avi Arad and Matt Tolmach producing. Both the female superhero spinoff and Venom Carnage are loosely slated for a 2017 release, following Drew Goddard’s already announced Sinister Six film in 2016.
So who could be the character that finally puts a lady back in the starring role of a major budget superhero flick? The top ones that come to mind are obviously Black Cat (whom had a vague non-costumed cameo in The Amazing Spider-Man 2) or possibly one of the many versions of Spider-Woman – the most notable being Jessica Drew. A longer shot, but still a cool, would be for a Silver Sable film – although if they want to go the route of using a non-powered character, Black Cat is way more well known.
It’s interesting to note that none of the characters mentioned above appear in any capacity in the first two films of Marc Webb’s Spider-Man franchise. With The Amazing Spider-Man 3 in limbo, it seems like a sure thing that they will not have any setup before establishing their own films in the cinematic Spider-verse films when they are released.
