Ever since the Star Wars spinoff films were announced by Disney and Lucasfilm, we’ve been hearing rumors that one of the projects would be a solo adventure featuring Boba Fett. That rumor has now been confirmed by The Wrap, who report that the second Star Wars Anthology film will be a Fett-centric origin.
The news comes just days after director Josh Trank exited the film, citing a desire to “pursue some original creative opportunities.” But multiple sources close to the project say the studio was concerned after Trank exhibited “erratic behavior” during the shooting and post-production of the Fantastic Four reboot over at Fox. There are also claims that Simon Kinberg, who produced Fantastic Four and is writing and producing the second Star Wars Anthology film, refused to work with Trank again.
With so little known about the character of Boba Fett, there are certainly a wide range of options available to explore. We know something of his youth, thanks to the prequel films, but with the dissolution of the Extended Universe, there’s really no official record of how Fett became the fearsome bounty hunter from The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi. It’s even possible that this film could take place across multiple timelines, filling in those gaps and perhaps even intersecting with the existing (and upcoming) Star Wars films in key moments.
The Wrap says that Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy has already begun searching for a new director, and that someone may be hired before Star Wars: Rogue One begins shooting this summer. That film will be directed by Gareth Edwards (Godzilla), and will follow a group of rebels on a mission to steal the plans for the original Death Star.
Star Wars: Rogue One is scheduled for a 2016 release, while the untitled Star Wars Anthology film featuring Boba Fett should be hitting theaters sometime in 2018.
