With two appearances as the masked wallcrawler already under his belt, The Amazing Spider-Man star Andrew Garfield has one more film on the horizon. But with a host of spinoff films in the works, including projects centered on The Sinister Six and Venom, a new rumor indicates that Sony is about to pony up some major cash to lock Garfield down for a few more flicks.
According to The Daily Mail, Garfield and his co-star (and real-life love interest) Emma Stone are celebrating a huge offer from the studio to commit himself to more outings as everyone’s favorite webslinger. The article quote a senior source at Columbia Pictures as saying:
“Andrew is already contracted to make two more films for release in 2015 and 2016… But we are looking to tie him to the role for as many as a further four pictures given the huge success the franchise is enjoying. The part is pretty much his for as long as he chooses.”
There’s even talk of Sony sweetening the pot with a profit-sharing deal on future installments, provided that Garfield continue to reprise his role for the next six years. It’s a major commitment, but if the franchise continues to dominate the box office, it could translate into a major payday for Garfield.
I’m curious about the quote though – what film could Garfield be appearing in that releases next year? The Amazing Spider-Man 3 doesn’t even have a finished script yet, let alone a shooting schedule, and neither of the spinoff films are far enough along in the development process to have a release prepped for next year, right?
I’m reminded of the rumor that sprung up a couple of years ago, about Sony and Marvel working on an agreement to have the OsCorp building appear in The Avengers… is it possible the two studios have worked out a deal to allow a Spider-Man cameo in The Avengers: Age of Ultron? Probably too much to hope for.
While I’m a huge advocate for Garfield in the role – he’s the best live-action incarnation of Spider-Man we’ve seen yet – no official statements have been released by the actor or the studio, so consider this just a rumor… for now.
