Robbie Amell will be DC Superhero Firestorm on 'The Flash'

Robbie Amell is climbing aboard CW’s The Flash as the Justice League’s Firestorm, the show’s first major non-Arrow DC Superhero guest star. Robbie (yes, he’s Stephen’s cousin) will be rejoining his Tomorrow People executive producer Greg Berlanti as Ronnie Raymond, one-half of the superhero duo that make up the being Firestorm.

Ronnie Raymond will make his first appearance in the third episode as Caitlyn Snow’s (Danielle Panabaker) fiancée. Fans know Caitlyn is eventually fated to one day become the super-villain Killer Frost. Ronnie will be employed by S.T.A.R. Labs as a maintenance worker, and plays an important role in the particle accelerator accident that gives Barry Allen his powers as The Flash.

Here’s what Berlanti and Amell had to say about the announcement:

“[Executive producers] Geoff Johns, Andrew Kreisberg and myself designed the pilot and series to include Ronnie (aka Firestorm) — and to actually have someone with Robbie’s talent playing the role is beyond exciting. We can’t wait for viewers and fans of the character to check it out,” said Berlanti.

Added Amell: “I’m so excited to join forces with Greg Berlanti and The CW again on The Flash. Being brought into the DC Universe is a dream, I can’t wait to get started!”

Firestorm has never been portrayed in live-action form before, but has made several animated appearances. Additionally, he has played an integral role in the New 52 Justice League storylines, and is also front and center in the current world-changing weekly series, Future’s End.

It’s cool to hear that Johns, Kreisberg and Berlanti had Firestorm in mind from the very beginning when planning out the series. But Robbie Amell’s casting does beg the question: Who will play Jason Rusch, the other half of Firestorm? Surely at some point they’ll meet up and don the fiery head together, but that’s going to be a tough one to pull off on a TV show budget. Can’t wait to see where they go with it.
