Transformers: Age of Extinction may not open in theaters for another week, but that isn’t stopping Paramount from looking ahead to future installments of Michael Bay’s blockbuster franchise. THR reports that during a presentation at the CineEurope conference, the studio offered a rundown of its release schedule for the next two years, confirming that Transformers 5 would drop in 2016.
This comes as little surprise, as the franchise is one of Paramount’s most successful offerings. Next week’s fourth installment was already rumored to be the starting point of another trilogy, so the news that Transformers 5 is on the way means that audiences can look forward to another two hours of robots punching, kicking, and shooting each other for our amusement.
Paramount’s other tentpole releases on the horizon include Terminator: Genesis and Mission: Impossible 5 in 2015, as well as Beverly Hills Cop 4, G.I. Joe 3, Hansel and Gretel 2, Paranormal Activity 5 and Star Trek 3, all slated for 2016. That’s a lot of sequels, but with franchises continuing to rake in cash at the box office, it’s a trend that isn’t likely to die anytime soon.
No word on whether Michael Bay intends to return for Transformers 5, or whether Mark Wahlberg’s character from Age of Extinction will be involved. We’ll keep you posted as we hear more.
