Marvel’s A-List superheroes are getting a shot of girl power in the comics with the announcement that a new female Thor will rise to take the hammer.
“The inscription on Thor’s hammer reads ‘Whosoever holds this hammer, if HE be worthy, shall possess the power of Thor.’ Well it’s time to update that inscription,” says Marvel editor Wil Moss. “The new Thor continues Marvel’s proud tradition of strong female characters like Captain Marvel, Storm, Black Widow and more. And this new Thor isn’t a temporary female substitute – she’s now the one and only Thor, and she is worthy!”
Moss makes it pretty clear this isn’t a gimmick or a sidekick, this new character is the main version going forward after her introduction. Still not buying it? Series writer Jason Aaron emphasizes, “This is not She-Thor. This is not Lady Thor. This is not Thorita. This is Thor. This is the Thor of the Marvel Universe. But it’s unlike any Thor we’ve ever seen before.”
This will certainly make for an interesting dynamic change when the new comic debuts this October. According to Marvel’s announcement, the current male character that fans are familiar with, will no longer be able to hold the mighty hammer Mjölnir and the new female will emerge to wield the iconic Asgardian weapon. Check out the first art of the new version below:
So who is she? Marvel isn’t revealing anything at this time, but they do pose the question in their release “Where did she come from and what is her connection to Asgard and the Marvel Universe?” Seems like a fairly good indicator that we’ve met this character before in some form or another. Fans will find out the answers for sure when the new Thor debuts in October, written by Jason Aaron and complimented with art from Russell Dauterman.
