While Robert Downey Jr. and Benedict Cumberbatch have both enjoyed turns as Sherlock Holmes (on the big screen and small screen, respectively), there’s a new player in town that carries plenty of clout: Sir Ian McKellan. In Mr. Holmes, McKellan portrays Sherlock Holmes in his later years, and the first teaser trailer for the film has just been released.
Roadside Attractions debuted the Mr. Holmes teaser trailer on YouTube. Check it out below.
I love seeing McKellan as Holmes – it’s just a really fun idea, and while the footage seems to hint that the detective’s legendary mind isn’t quite what it used to be, it still seems to have a light-hearted tone. All in all, this looks like it could be pretty good. We should get a better sense of what the film has to offer as we get closer to the release date. Mr. Holmes is currently scheduled to hit theaters this summer, with Bill Condon directing.
MR. HOLMES is a new twist on the world’s most famous detective. 1947, an aging Sherlock Holmes returns from a journey to Japan, where, in search of a rare plant with powerful restorative qualities, he has witnessed the devastation of nuclear warfare. Now, in his remote seaside farmhouse, Holmes faces the end of his days tending to his bees, with only the company of his housekeeper and her young son, Roger. Grappling with the diminishing powers of his mind, Holmes comes to rely upon the boy as he revisits the circumstances of the unsolved case that forced him into retirement, and searches for answers to the mysteries of life and love – before it’s too late.
