A few months ago, we brought you a rumor (first reported by Latino Review) that Matt Damon was being courted to return to his role as Jason Bourne for a fifth film in the franchise. At the time, it was thought that the addition of Fast and Furious director Justin Lin might have resulted in a concept that had caught Damon’s interest, but the rumors were quickly shot down by producer Frank Marshall.
Today, Deadline reported that Universal has entered into talks with Damon and director Paul Greengrass for another film, and that the previously announced spinoff sequel featuring Jeremy Renner (and directed by Lin) would be pushed back, with the Damon/Greengrass pairing taking over the confirmed July 16, 2016 release date.
The spinoff, which continues the story of Aaron Cross (Renner) that began with The Bourne Legacy, will still happen, but it will take a backseat to Damon’s return. This also opens the possibility for the two storylines to cross over, a move which should please series fans who have been clamoring for just such a development.
Keep in mind that this news isn’t confirmed by the studio. In fact, reps for Universal, Damon and Greengrass all declined to comment – which certainly isn’t a denial. We’ll keep you posted on Bourne 5 as we learn more.
