Margot Robbie to Play Harley Quinn in Suicide Squad

Just a few days ago, we learned that Jared Leto was being courted by Warner Bros. for the role of The Joker in David Ayer’s Suicide Squad film, and now another popular character has been confirmed for the film. Collider has learned that Margot Robbie has signed on for the role of Harley Quinn, The Joker’s love interest/sidekick, and one of the key members of the Suicide Squad team in the pages of DC Comics.

The character of Harley Quinn was first introduced in Batman: The Animated Series, and became so popular that she was written into the ongoing comic book continuity. Originally a psychiartrist at Arkham Asylum, Dr. Harleen Quinzel’s attempts to analyze and treat The Joker resulted in an ongoing fascination with the master criminal. She eventually fell in love with him, reinvented herself as Harley Quinn and helped him escape, and has been at his side ever since. Quinn and The Joker share a mutually manipulative and abusive relationship, and it will be interesting to see how this is translated into the film.

Robbie has been in talks for a role in Suicide Squad for awhile now, and while early reports indicated that Harley Quinn would not be part of the film’s lineup, it looks like those revisions that Ayer is currently making are shaking up what we know about the characters that will be included. Robbie’s performance in last year’s Wolf of Wall Street garnered plenty of attention, and could even serve as a decent blueprint for how Quinn’s personality will be portrayed onscreen.

We’ll have more Suicide Squad news as it continues to develop. The film is currently scheduled for a 2016 release. Robbie can next be seen in Focus, alongside Will Smith (who is also in talks for Suicide Squad).
