The Lego Movie was a brilliant and hilarious family film that boasted a huge success for Warner Bros. earlier this year, leading to an almost immediate greenlighting of a sequel. The Lego Movie 2 had originally been slated for release on May 16, 2017, but the studio’s recent decision to fast track a Lego Batman spinoff has taken priority, with The Lego Movie animation supervisor Chris McKay directing, and the spinoff reportedly taking over the 2017 release date.
But that shuffling of release dates might have actually worked in the sequel’s favor, as Phil Lord and Chris Miller, the writing/directing duo behind The Lego Movie, have now signed on to pen The Lego Movie 2 for a 2018 release. No word yet on whether or not they’ll be directing the sequel, but with the first film grossing $468 million worldwide, and with McKay busy working on Lego Batman, Warner Bros. would almost certainly want Miller and Lord back at the helm.
With a four-year wait ahead, it’s likely we’ll hear more about Lego Batman and the studio’s other Lego Movie spinoff, Ninjago (scheduled to hit theaters on September 23, 2016) long before we get any additional details on The Lego Movie 2. But as always, we’ll keep you updated.
