There’s no denying that Alan Cumming’s portrayal of Nightcrawler is one of the best things about X2: X-Men United, and fans of the series have been anxiously awaiting the character’s return. The good news is, we won’t have to wait much longer: Bryan Singer has confirmed that a young version of the character will appear in X-Men: Apocalypse.
The news comes from Singer’s Instagram, where he revealed that Let Me In star Kodi Smit-McPhee had been cast in the role of young Kurt Wagner:
This should come as a very welcome surprise for X-Men fans. Singer has already shown that he knows how to utilize Nightcrawler’s abilities to create exciting action sequences, and Smit-McPhee should fit in well with some of the younger cast members. Can we expect to see some of the character’s life in the circus – or with X-Men: Apocalypse taking place in an alternate timeline, will he have a completely different origin?
Nightcrawler isn’t the only younger version of a previous character we can expect to see, with the recent additions of Alexandra Shipp as Storm, Sophie Turner as Jean Grey, and Tye Sheridan as Cyclops. James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Jennifer Lawrence and Nicholas Hoult will return for the sequel, facing off against Oscar Isaac as the titular mutant villain, Apocalypse. Production begins this spring, with X-Men: Apocalypse set to open on May 27, 2016.
