Justice League: Gods & Monsters is the next release in the DC Animated Library, and this time will take viewers to another universe – literally. In our review of Batman vs. Robin, we mentioned that it gave a preview of this release revealing a very different, bizzare Justice League tale. The movie takes place in a separate dimension from the current shared DC Animated Universe, and focuses on a Superman that is the son of General Zod and a vampire Batman, among other wild choices. Check out the first trailer via IGN below:
As stated in our review of Batman vs. Robin, Justice League: Gods & Monsters is obviously an “Elseworlds” tale, and a weird one at that, but Bruce Timm’s involvement has my interest peaked. For those not familiar with Timm’s work, he is the acclaimed producer/animator behind some of the finest of DC’s animated output including Batman: The Animated Series, Justice League, Batman Beyond and more.
Justice League: Gods & Monsters also features a top notch voice cast, as is normally the case with these releases, including: Michael C. Hall (Dexter) as Batman, Benjamin Bratt (24: Live Another Day) as Superman, Tamara Taylor (Bones, Serenity) as Wonder Woman, Jason Isaacs (Harry Potter films, Star Wars Rebels) as Lex Luthor, Paget Brewster (Community) as Lois Lane, and C. Thomas Howell (The Amazing Spider-Man) as Dr. Will Magnus.
Here’s the official synopsis:
Journey to a divergent reality where the Justice League protects the planet — but answers to no one but themselves. Employing methods of intimidation and fear, this Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman deal brute force in the name of justice. In this alternate universe, Superman was not raised by the Kents in Smallville, the Caped Crusader is not Bruce Wayne, and Wonder Woman is not an Amazon warrior of Themyscira. When a group of famed scientists experience untimely “accidents,” a government task force follows the trail of clues to the Justice League — but is there a more powerful player operating from the shadows? It’s a high stakes game of intrigue, mystery and action that asks the question: How do you serve justice to those above the law?
