Jada Pinkett Smith has apparently had her fill of Gotham and will not be returning to the show for its second season. The actress plays crime boss Fish Mooney, a villain created for the series, introduced during the first season of the Batman origin show.
Pinkett Smith told EXTRA the following about her decision to leave the show and has echoed the same sentiment to a few other outlets while making press rounds:
“We’re done, I did my year and I had a good time. The show is gonna [have]an awesome finale. I’ve always been a comic book fan so it was definitely a dream to be able to participate in an origin story of Batman with an original character. Who would’ve thought in a million years that I would have the opportunity to do that?”
While I enjoyed her over-the-top performance as Fish, I have to wonder if her decision to leave had anything to do with the fact that early on the show shifted focus from her character to other more well-received villains like Oswald Cobblepot. While her power struggle with Falcone remained interesting, the character was dumped into a terrible, dead-end story during the second half of the season involving an organ harvesting business that took place completely separate from every other character on the show. The lone memorable moment was in a recent episode where Fish carved out her own eye with a spoon.
Pinkett Smith is remaining professional when addressing her departure and nobody could accuse her of phoning in her bombastic performance as Fish Mooney. It might not have been the best character, but she made the most of it and brought some star power to the show.
No word on whether Fish Mooney will be killed off or if the door will be left open for her to return at a later date. Gotham was renewed for a second season in January.
