Oscar nominated actor J.K. Simmons is making the press rounds promoting his incredible performance in Whiplash, and may have let slip a bit of a Spider-Man scoop. Simmons memorably played grumpy Daily Bugle editor and bane of Peter Parker’s existence, J. Jonah Jameson, in all three of Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man films.
Stern, a well-known comic fan, ended the excellent hour-long interview from Wednesday’s Sirius XM Show with a question about whether or not Simmons would make another Spider-Man film. Here’s the exchange:
Stern: “The great J.K. Simmons, who has been entertaining us for years, whether it be on TV or movies and of course one of the most sacred films and best films ever made Spider-Man, as well…
Robin: “Well, there were three of those.”
Stern: “Hey, are we doing another one or what?”
Simmons: “I just heard that we… that that’s a possibility!”
Stern: “Would you do it?”
Simmons: “Absolutely.”

So what does that mean for Simmons, and the overall Spider-Man universe on film? It could mean quite a few things, including bringing his portrayal of Jameson into director Marc Webb’s The Amazing Spider-Man universe. More interesting though, would be if the character of Jameson was part of a package deal being sold back to Marvel Studios to use in the MCU per recent rumors.
A longer shot is that potentially Raimi could return to the franchise for a fourth film. That seems like a bit of a stretch, but if we want to dig deep into the phrasing of Stern’s question and Simmons’ response, that possibility could definitely be inferred from what was said.
What do you think? Does Simmons own the role of Jameson for you, or would you rather some else get another shot the next time the character appears on the big screen?
