Over the course of film history, there have been very few actors more synonymous with a role than Hugh Jackman as Wolverine. With seven performances under his belt, the Australian actor doesn’t seem ready to hang up the adamantium claws just yet, hinting that he may be back for more action in 2016’s X-Men Apocalpyse.
During an appearance on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Jackman spoke about his possible involvement in X-Men: Apocalypse:
“I have been speaking with the guys and I am not at liberty to tell exactly what’s going on. Which is largely framing my answer here. But there’s still a lot unknown, actually, about that. What I do know is there are some very exciting things about integrating the whole X-Men world, including the Wolverine movie. There’s some really cool things going on.”
So while this stops short of being a confirmation, it certainly isn’t a denial, and it sounds like we can expect Wolverine to appear in the film. I wouldn’t expect his role to be nearly as large as X-Men: Days of Future Past, as Fox seems to be focused on pushing Mystique, Magneto and Professor Xavier into the forefront, but writer Simon Kinberg has mentioned that the film will contain appearances from members of the original X-Men cast.
Jackman also confirmed that he and The Wolverine James Mangold were continuing to develop another Wolverine solo film, although he declined to offer further details, saying only “Mangold and I are working on it really hard and I’m very very excited about that, actually.”
X-Men: Apocalypse is scheduled to hit theaters on May 27, 2016, with Bryan Singer returning to direct. The cast includes returning stars Jennifer Lawrence, Michael Fassbender, James McAvoy and Nicholas Hoult, with newcomer Oscar Isaac recently joining the ranks as the villainous Apocalypse. The next Wolverine film, meanwhile, is slated for March 3, 2017.
