'Guardians of the Galaxy' Animated Series Confirmed for 2015

Guardians of the Galaxy was the surprise runaway smash movie of the year, so it’s no surprise that Marvel’s cosmic team will have further adventures with an animated treatment in 2015. Disney XD announced at New York Comic-Con that Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy will be part of their “Marvel Universe” block of programming.

The show will focus on Peter Quill aka Star-Lord and his team of diverse miscreants that will include the same lineup from the film: Drax, Gamora, Groot, and Rocket Racoon. The show will join the already running animated series lineup from Marvel that includes Avengers Assemble and Hulk and the Agents of SMASH. Here’s what Marvel’s head of television Jeph Loeb had to say from New York Comic-Con:

“This is a very exciting time for the Marvel Animation Studio as we get to explore the cosmic side of the Marvel Universe by developing the first-ever Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy animated series. After starring in the biggest movie of 2014, everyone wants more of Star-Lord and his crew – now they’ll get it.”

Curious what the series will look like? Marvel and Disney XD also released this test footage today:

Looks pretty cool and definitely has a more mature and “anime” look to it than some of Marvel’s Disney XD shows. Avengers Assemble is a lot of fun, but hopefully Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy will be a bit more nuanced and intelligent than their other show, Hulk and the Agents of SMASH. Does the idea of more Star-Lord and company excite you, or would you rather just wait until James Gunn brings us Guardians of the Galaxy 2? Let us know what you guys think!
