Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson has been teasing his potential involvement in a comic book film for quite some time. He’s said on more than one occasion that he and Warner Bros. have come to an agreement on a DC character for him to play, but he always stops short of revealing which character that might be. Speculation has ranged from Lobo to Black Adam to John Stewart (Green Lantern), and a recent interview seemed to point toward Shazam.
While in Mexico to promote the release of Hercules, Johnson apparently told the Associated Press that he would, in fact, appear in a Shazam film, but that he had yet to decide on whether he would portray Shazam or his nemesis, Black Adam. Johnson admitted that he was a fan of anti-heroes, and that Black Adam was one of his favorite comic book characters.
He also told journalists that he would make sure fans aren’t disappointed, and that he was “putting my heart and soul and my bones into this role.”
It’s worth noting that Warner Bros. hasn’t made any official announcements regarding a Shazam movie, but they’re going to need something to fill all those release dates, and if Johnson is talking openly about the film, then an official announcement should be coming soon.
