It was less than two months ago when we learned that the Wonder Woman solo film would begin shooting this fall, under the direction of Michelle MacLaren. While the film might still be on schedule, it sounds like the studio will need to find someone else to step behind the camera.
According to THR, MacLaren and Warner Bros. have parted ways on the project. Here’s the official statement:
“Given creative differences, Warner Bros. and Michelle MacLaren have decided not to move forward with plans to develop and direct Wonder Woman together.”
“Creative differences” often seems to be something of a catch-all when it comes to these situations. But it’s worth noting that this is the second time a female director has walked away from a comic book film during the development process. Back in 2011, Patty Jenkins was attached to the Thor sequel at Marvel, before exiting the project amid – you guessed it – “creative differences.”
MacLaren has plenty of experience behind the camera, serving on such high-profile shows as Game of Thrones, Breaking Bad, and The Walking Dead. Wonder Woman would have marked MacLaren’s feature film debut, with the added bonus of being a female-centric superhero flick, but now it looks like the studio will be scrambling to replace her in order to stay on schedule.
Gal Gadot will star in Wonder Woman, after making her first appearance as the character in next year’s Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. The film is scheduled to open on June 23, 2017.
