Capcom’s hit survival horror franchise Dead Rising is making the jump from gaming consoles to a film adaptation, and will be the first project created for Legendary Digital Media. Variety says that Transformers franchise producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura is attached as executive producer, with Mortal Kombat: Legacy producer Tim Carter handling the scripting duties.
While most of the trades are reporting that no director is attached, the folks over at /Film have it on good authority that Leprechaun: Origins director Zack Lipovsky will be at the helm. But don’t be looking for this one in theaters – it’ll debut on Sony’s streaming service, Crackle, before moving to SVOD, DVD, VOD and TV afterward.
The Dead Rising franchise offers something of a comedic take on tried-and-true zombie movie tropes: the protagonist of the original game was trapped in a mall teeming with swarms of undead, forced to fight his way to the rooftop, rescuing survivors along the way and fighting off wave after wave of zombies with anything he can get his hands on. There’s something strangely fulfilling about carving your way through walking corpses using a giant stuffed teddy bear or an oversized plastic traffic cone, and it should be interesting to see how this concept translates to the film medium.
Dead Rising currently has no scheduled release date.
