Anthony and Joe Russo did a stellar job directing Captain America: The Winter Soldier, and will be back behind the camera for Civil War, as well. But today we can put another long-standing rumor to rest: the Russo Brothers will also helm both installments of Avengers Infinity War.
The news comes via Badass Digest, who says the Russo Brothers have just closed their deal with Marvel. There are no writers attached yet, but Marvel is said to be looking at Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely, which makes a lot of sense. Markus and McFeely scripted all three Captain America films, in addition to getting the Agent Carter series off the ground. And with Civil War reportedly laying the groundwork for the events of Infinity War, why not keep the same creative team together?
With Joss Whedon walking away from the Marvel Universe after Avengers: Age of Ultron, this basically means that the Russo Brothers will be taking his place – not only working on the biggest films, but also helping to shape the universe going forward.
This seems to conflict with another project the Russo Brothers have lines up, however: the Channing Tatum Ghostbusters flick over at Sony. They’re reportedly attached to direct and produce that one, but trying to finish Civil War, go right into Ghostbusters, and then into the two-part Avengers: Infinity War seems like an overly ambitious schedule. We’re not saying it can’t be done – just that it sounds exhausting.
Marvel hasn’t made an official announcement on this one yet, but it should be coming soon. Avengers: Infinity War Part 1 will release in May 2018, with Part 2 following in May 2019.
