We already told you about the confirmation that Fox would release a standalone Gambit film on October 7, 2016, starring Channing Tatum as the popular Cajun mutant. But the studio revealed plenty of other release dates yesterday, including tentpoles like Assassin’s Creed, featuring Michael Fassbender, which is now slated for December 21, 2016.
A Christmas release window speaks pretty highly about the studio’s opinion of the film, and it’s likely that Fassbender’s star will continue to rise over the next two years, drawing even more attention to the project. Based on the popular video game series of the same name, Assassin’s Creed will be directed by Justin Kurzel, from a new draft by Exodus scribes Adam Cooper and Bill Collage.
Fox also shuffled a few dates around for their summer 2017 releases, with Fantastic Four 2 moving up a few weeks to June 2, 2017, and Planet of the Apes 3 set for July 14, 2017. This should be a sign of encouragement for anyone looking forward to Fantastic Four – the film is scheduled to open this summer, and we’ve yet to see a single frame of footage, but locking down a sequel seems to indicate that Fox has faith in the franchise.
In other news, the comedy Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates is coming on July 29, 2016. The film wil be a raunchy comedy in the vein of The Hangover or Let’s Be Cops, about a pair of brothers who post an online ad seeking dates to a wedding. Jake Szymanski is directing from a script by Andrew J. Cohen and Brendan O’Brien.
Also on the release schedule is The Greatest Showman on Earth, a biopic of P.T. Barnum starring Hugh Jackman. Look for this one on December 25, 2016, just a few days after Assassin’s Creed opens. And finally, the romantic drama The Mountain Between Us, featuring Charlie Hunnam and Rosamund Pike, will be hitting theaters on February 10, 2017.
