With films like Prisoners, Enemy and Sicario under his belt, Denis Villeneuve continues to be one of the most interesting directors to watch – and personally, I’m excited to see him beginning to brand out into the sci-fi realm. While the long-gestating Blade Runner sequel is obviously his most high-profile gig yet, we won’t have to wait much longer to see what Villeneuve brings to the genre, because his next film is only a few months away.
Starring Amy Adams, Jeremy Renner and Forest Whitaker, Arrival charts the sudden appearance of alien spacecraft all over the globe, and the linguist (Adams) who is tasked with trying to translate their language. Check out the first full-length trailer below.
I’m really digging the tone of this footage. We’ve seen plenty of alien invasion scenarios that have basically been positioned as “us vs. them,” but this seems to be focused more on understanding and learning from each other in hopes of avoiding conflict. It’s a fresh approach, and seems to fit well with Villeneuve’s sensibilities.
Arrival will… um… “arrive” on November 11.
When mysterious spacecraft touch down across the globe, an elite team – lead by expert linguist Louise Banks (Amy Adams) – are brought together to investigate. As mankind teeters on the verge of global war, Banks and the team race against time for answers – and to find them, she will take a chance that could threaten her life, and quite possibly humanity.
