Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg’s TV adaptation of Preacher continues to move forward, with Variety announcing that AMC has ordered a pilot for the series, which will shoot next summer with Rogen and Goldberg likely directing. The project is based on the comic book series from Garth Ennis, about a renegade preacher from South Texas possessed by a demon, who goes on a cross-country mission to confront God with all of his grievances.
The pilot script comes from Sam Catlin, who served as a writer and producer on Breaking Bad, and will be produced by Neil Moritz through Original Film, along with Rogen and Goldberg. AMC’s executive vice president of original programming, production and digital content, Joel Stillerman, had this to say about the upcoming Preacher adaptation:
“Every once in a while you find a project where all the elements line up beautifully. With ‘Preacher,’ it starts with a bold, compelling, and thought-provoking comic book series from Garth Ennis and Steve Dillon and a whole lot of fans who already know Jesse Custer, Cassidy, and Tulip. Add to that the passionate and talented Seth Rogen, Evan Goldberg, and Sam Catlin, an incredible producing team in Neal Moritz, the Original Film team and our good friends at Sony Pictures Television, and we have everything we need to be very excited to move forward on ‘Preacher.’”
Rogen and Goldberg have been very vocal about their excitement for bringing the comic book to life, and issued the following brief comment:
“’Preacher’ has been our favorite comic since it first came out,” said Rogen and Goldberg, who are also attached to direct. “Garth Ennis is one of our idols and it’s an incredible honor to be working on this. We promise we won’t make too many dick jokes and ruin it.”
No casting announcements have been made yet for the Preacher series, although I still prefer Justified star Jacob Pitts in the leading role of Jesse Custer. Preacher will shoot in summer 2015, and will likely air in early 2016. We’ll keep you posted as we hear more.
