Affordable AMD Laptop for Kids That Isn’t a Chromebook

Remember the days of netbooks? While they were budget-friendly, their performance often left much to be desired. Thankfully, while netbooks have mostly vanished, you can still find ultra-affordable options today. For instance, Walmart is offering a Motile 14-inch laptop with a 1080p display and a Ryzen 3 processor with Vega 3 graphics for just $209.

This is a significant drop from its usual price of $599. While I wouldn’t recommend this laptop at full price, the current deal makes it hard to beat—especially if you’re mostly looking at Chromebooks in this price range.

The specifications are modest: it comes with 4GB of RAM and a 128GB SSD. So, it’s not going to compete with high-end gaming laptops. However, several users have mentioned that upgrading the RAM and storage is straightforward.

One user shared, “Great laptop. Easy to upgrade. I added 16GB RAM and a 256GB NVMe SSD, and it made a huge difference. I picked it up for $199 and spent an additional $75 on upgrades, which was totally worth it. Before the upgrades, it was decent, but afterwards, it was fantastic!”

While I can’t confirm these claims firsthand, other reviews echo similar experiences. One commenter pointed out that there’s an available NVMe slot and that the RAM isn’t soldered to the motherboard, which would be a great feature if accurate.

Overall, this laptop is quite intriguing. Besides the impressive 1080p display, it also includes an IR camera with Windows Hello support—features that are rare in this price range.
