If there’s one thing that remains a constant for Comic-Con attendees, it’s the annual Marvel presentation in Hall H. Fans will begin lining up outside Hall H in the wee hours of the morning – some of them even camp out overnight – just to guarantee themselves a seat. But this year, those tents and sleeping bags might not be necessary: a new rumor indicates that Marvel won’t be there.
The news comes from Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn (as reported by the SDCC Unofficial Blog). Gunn was doing a Facebook Q&A over the weekend, and when someone asked if he would be attending Comic-Con this year, he said he wasn’t sure, because Marvel wouldn’t be there.
This certainly comes as a surprise, as Marvel tends to have a major Comic-Con presence each year. They typically unveil exclusive footage, and some of the biggest stars from the Marvel frachise are often in attendance. The studio is such a huge part of the Hall H experience that it seems odd they would skip out.
But there’s also Disney’s bi-annual D23 Expo, taking place just a few weeks after this year’s Comic-Con. With Star Wars already rumored to be making an appearance there, it’s conceivable that Marvel could be working on a presentation, as well. This would be a huge win for Disney, and they could definitely use the one-two punch of Marvel and Star Wars as a great way to generate interest and sell tickets.
As the SDCC Unofficial Blog points out, though, it’s not very likely that Gunn would have been in attendance at Comic-Con this year, anyway. Guardians of the Galaxy 2 is still in the very early stages, and it would make a lot more sense for the studio to promote Captain America: Civil War. And even if there’s no presentation this year, expect Marvel to still have a major presence on the exhibit floor. It would make no sense for them to bypass the event completely.
At this time, Marvel hasn’t commented on the rumor, but we’ll update you if they make an official statement.
