Last week, Warner Bros. unveiled their entire slate of DC Comics films, and among those titles were a few surprises, most notably a Cyborg standalone film with Ray Fisher in the title role. We already knew that Fisher would have a cameo appearance as the character in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, but the announcement of a spinoff film centering on the character came as a surprise – even to Fisher.
Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, Fisher reveals that he was just as shocked as the rest of us to learn of the news:
“I didn’t know the extent to which DC and WB had planned on taking my character. When I signed on, I just wanted to be part of this world. But that specific information, I found out then and there. I didn’t think I’d be getting my own stand-alone film.”
EW also points out that Fisher will be the first African-American actor to headline a superhero film since Will Smith’s role as Hancock in 2008. It’s a big move for the 27-year-old actor, who has spent most of his career on the Broadway stage, and he’s looking forward to the challenge.
“I’m a long-game player and didn’t see any of this happening until at least my 40s. It’s a huge honor, but a bit of pressure comes along with it. My mind is just boggled right now.”
Fisher also spoke briefly about his Batman v Superman cameo appearance, which he wrapped shooting in July.
“I met everyone in the Justice League except Henry Cavill and Ezra Miller. It was surreal. You get this idea of going to work on a Hollywood set as being really stressful and nerve-wracking. But it blew that stereotype away. If they did have stressful times, it wasn’t while I was there.”
Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice will be released on March 26, 2016. Fisher should also factor into both Justice League films before he headlines the Cyborg standalone flick in 2020.
